Publix associate pays it forward

Chase Murray

It was just like any other day at #483, Summerville, South Carolina. Customer Service Team Leader (now Assistant Customer Service Manager) Chase Murray was working diligently to encourage his fellow associates to participate in the Food for Sharing register program.

“Chase loves to help build team morale and inspire associates to participate in the charitable programs at the store,” stated Store Manager Jennifer O’Dell. “Whenever we are accepting donations, Chase makes it a point to donate every time he checks out, no matter how small the purchase. He is a very giving person and eager to help in any situation.”

Since Chase is always willing to help, it was no surprise when a cashier called Chase over to assist a customer in need. The customer forgot he’d lent his debit card to his wife earlier in the day and had no way to pay for his small order of groceries.

“He didn’t ask any questions or even hesitate. He just paid for his groceries and told him to have a nice day. While some might be surprised, if you’ve worked with Chase, you wouldn’t be,” explained Jennifer. “Things like this are just what Chase does. He has a huge heart.”

Upon returning home, the customer explained to his wife what happened on his trip to Publix, and they immediately drove back to the store. They wanted to repay Chase and thank him for his generosity, but were shocked when Chase refused to accept their money. Instead, he explained they could use the cash to make a donation to the Food for Sharing program; that’s what he would do with the money anyway. The customers were impressed, not just by the level of customer service, but by Chase’s compassion and dedication to others.

Chase was presented a gold coin by his store manager for his commitment to providing superior customer service and being a responsible citizen to the communities we serve.

The gold coin is presented to associates who embrace the Publix culture and provide premier service the way Mr. George himself would have. Receiving a gold coin means you’ve made a real difference in the lives of others by going above and beyond. Associates can become eligible for the gold coin by receiving customer praise through the customer care department, which reviews each case based on established criteria and guidelines.
