Store manager does his part to pay it forward

Store Manager Don Phillips

When he started working at Publix as a high school student, Store Manager Don Phillips, #1020, New Port Richey, Florida, never expected to make a career here.

“Like a lot of people, I didn’t realize all the opportunity there was at Publix,” said Don. “But when I started working my way up in the produce department, I really began to like what I was doing.”

He liked it, but also had other passions he wanted to pursue. So, after eight years, he left Publix to start his own graphic design business. Two years later, a chance encounter with a previous manager led to his biggest decision yet.

“I ran into my former produce manager who had been promoted to store manager, and he encouraged me to come back,” said Don.

Now, more than 20 years later, Don couldn’t imagine being anywhere else. He shares his story with other associates so they understand what they could have at Publix if they commit to building a career here.

“One thing I love about my job is that I get to help associates see all the possibilities at Publix. And, I can prepare them so they’re ready when their opportunity knocks,” said Don. “I respect all the managers who helped me get to where I am, and I want to repay the favor by being the best manager and mentor I can be.”

Don enjoys helping associates prepare for their next roles at Publix and feels he’s most successful when he’s leading others to success.

“Publix has been a huge part of my life, and I want others to feel that same feeling — the feeling of being part of something big.”

And for that, Don is recognized as our featured retail associate for the My Publix, My Part program.
