Welcome to the family!

When a store opens in a new market — let alone a new state — it’s an exciting, extra special occasion. This is our chance to introduce Publix to a new set of customers and associates, many of whom aren’t familiar with our brand. It also gives us an opportunity to emulate our founder, Mr. George, and experience what he must have felt when he opened his first store more than 87 years ago.

Family Night crowd

Soon after we announced our entry into Virginia, managers and associates from around the company requested to relocate for the opportunity to pass along our culture to new members of the Publix family. And, customers were eager to visit us for the first of what we expect will be many pleasant shopping experiences.

But before #1566, Glen Allen, Virginia, opened its doors to customers the morning of July 15, associates and their loved ones gathered at family night for an evening of celebration and recognition. Associates proudly showed off their new store to friends and family as they enjoyed Boar’s Head hot dogs, Publix Deli Cubanitos, bakery cake and fresh fruit before filling the produce, deli and bakery departments for the evening’s ceremony. After opening remarks from Customer Service Retail Improvement Specialist Nick Walter, Store Manager Chellie Peck introduced her management team and their families.

Jars of dirt from groundbreaking.

“It’s such a privilege to work alongside this incredible team,” said Chellie. “We’re a focused team, a dedicated team, and we’re committed, with one Publix, one purpose in mind: to providing premier service.”

CEO & President Todd Jones spoke about Publix’s humble beginnings and the importance of carrying on Mr. George’s spirit by taking care of customers and associates. He also called upon veteran associates to mentor new ones by sharing Publix’s culture and continuing Mr. George’s legacy.

“You have helped us become one of the most recognized companies in the nation,” said Todd. “When we open those doors tomorrow, our customers are going to be blown away, and Mr. George will be looking down and smiling.”

Publix donated $5,000 to local schools.
