2018: what’s trending in social media

This year, social media is poised to create even more of a disruption as new technological advancements go mainstream.

Last year, Apple debuted the iPhone 8 and the iPhone X. Both devices incorporate a new chip that provides users with extraordinary augmented reality experiences. Social media platforms like Snapchat and Instagram are finding ways to incorporate the new technology.

A number of new social media trends that will impact users and brands alike are strengthening and accelerating. It’s likely video streaming and virtual reality (VR) will go mainstream, and brands will turn to social platforms like Instagram and Snapchat as Gen Zers (born between 1995 – 2014) increasingly spend their time there, but don’t count Facebook and Twitter out yet.

Facebook isn’t just interested in live video streaming; it’s been working on a project called Spaces, which is designed to connect friends in VR. Given that Facebook owns Oculus, a VR hardware and software company, it’s no surprise the social media giant is developing a platform to use this new technology. Facebook is looking to introduce Spaces later this year, and when it does, it’s likely this will be the first VR social media product.

Twitter failed to see significant growth in 2017. In fact, LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram all have more active users. This year, Twitter may be sold to private investors or require a subscription. Others look for a revamping of Twitter’s advertising options.

Houseparty is a video hangout platform used by more than 1 million people every day. It’s primarily used by Gen Zers as a way to hang out — digitally — with friends. The platform has gained momentum, and Facebook is reportedly looking to create a similar functionality within its platform. Look for Facebook to announce a similar product to Houseparty, if the rumors are true.
