When Michael Niroomand-Rad, a fifth grade student at Alexander Montessori School, was given a descriptive writing assignment about a place he knows well, he chose his local Publix, #595, Miami. As you read his essay, allow your senses to capture the essence of the store.
From the minute I step inside its wide glass doors I feel as chilly as a snowy day. Publix’s walls are moss green and white, and everything is beautifully organized. Countless food is lined up straight, never misplaced and it’s always easy to find what you want to purchase. All the aisles are filled with tasty items. Walking past the deli, the air is filled with the fragrant smell of warm chicken right out of the oven. One bite, and I feel like I’m in heaven. The chicken tastes so tender and crisp, like no other. Small, warm piles of rice, long, thick strips of pasta, and tasty cold cuts push you up into the air and drifting toward them. Once you pass the deli, you come across fruits and vegetables on stands everywhere. Green, yellow, red and orange — you name it. Juicy tomatoes and sweet watermelons are ready to go home with you. Your mind goes crazy, should I choose this or that? Their variety is abundant. If you are lucky, your parents allow you to get at least two or three sweets. Wherever you walk, there are shiny, clean floors and the roof is filled with bright lights and security cameras. Friendly employees answer all your questions. The wide and long frozen section is my favorite. Freezing air gives you the goosebumps after opening the door to get your food. Small stands have samples of food that employees make. As soon as you take your first bite, you’ll think this food is magical. When you’re looking for something to eat for breakfast, lunch or dinner, start driving to Publix, “Where shopping is a pleasure.”
