September is a big month in our history. On Sept. 6, the 1st Publix opened its doors, and Mr. George’s birthday is Sept. 29!

When Mr. George opened the 1st Publix in Winter Haven, Florida, in 1930, his mission was to be there for all associates and customers while giving back to his community. In the 96 years that have followed, we have grown from that 1 store to more than 1,400 and employ over 260,000 associates by following those same ideals — accomplishments Mr. George would likely be particularly proud of.

As the company grew, our 1st corporate office building was constructed in 1951 and then expanded in the 1960s, when Mr. George moved into the corner office that is still there today. Our founder worked at the desk on display from that point forward, and his son, Howard, also used it when he was CEO.

Artifacts from the era when Mr. George led our company are on display — right where he used to work. These include a personalized mechanical calculator (a comptometer), a Rolodex and art decorating the walls.
