Holiday season: How to socialize while social distancing

Being an introvert has never been easier. But even in a pandemic, a wallflower can find ways to become the life of the party.

Of course, we want you to stay safe. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of holiday party ideas that will keep your guests happy — and at least 6 feet apart.

Collect canned goods for a cause. Don’t forget the reason for the season. If you’re looking for ways to give back, get your friends and family involved. Choose a local charity in need and host a canned food drive. Have your friends leave canned goods at your doorstep to maintain social distancing. Then, livestream the donation drop-off to share with your fellow donors.

Give your Friendsgiving a fun twist. Have you ever wished there was a way to throw a party that didn’t require you to clean your house? Now there is. Tell your friends to whip up their favorite beverage and have them join you for a virtual happy hour. Take a sip every time someone says, “Sorry, I was on mute.”

Get in the spirit with curbside caroling. If your favorite holiday pastime is spreading cheer for all to hear, now is your time to sing with no fear. Rally your friends or family to do a drive-by parade in your neighborhood, roll your windows down and let the caroling begin! See how many neighbors you can get to come outside and sing along from their front steps.

Embrace your outside space. If your singing voice would make Santa leave a lump of coal in your stocking, you can still light up the holiday season — literally. Now’s your time to invest in decorating the outside of your home (or apartment) with holiday lights and decorations for passersby to enjoy. For added fun, see if your neighbors will join in for a friendly competition. Winner gets bragging rights.

Do good with some goodie bags. If you do decide to have friends or family over, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends keeping your gathering to 10 people or fewer, preferably outdoors. Maintain social distancing and wear face coverings when possible. As your guests enter, offer them a goodie bag of mini hand sanitizers, tissues or fun face coverings.
