How you can learn to like exercise (kind of)

The old 30-minutes-per-day rule … it can feel like an eternity. All that sweating and breathing hard. Some people love it, but not you.

Here’s the good news: 30 minutes a day is no longer the recommended minimum. Now, it’s all about fitting in at least 150 minutes per week. And you don’t have to do it all at once. Best yet, any amount of physical activity can provide health benefits, so simply moving more and sitting less can do you good!

So where should a sweat-avoiding workout-hater start?

  • Do what you enjoy! If you like to dance, put on some music and dance like no one’s watching. Maybe you hate the treadmill, but you love keeping your home spotless. Whatever gets you moving is what will keep you moving.
  • Try different things until you find what you like. If you like to socialize, you might like a team sport or group class. If you value alone time, you might prefer to walk your dog. It’s all good.
  • Set a goal and make it a habit. What’s realistic for you? Figure out where you can fit in some movement and do it consistently.
  • Be patient with yourself. It takes time to build a habit, so forgive yourself if you miss a day. Just pick it up again tomorrow.

Whether you become a fitness junkie or not, working some physical activity into your daily routine can help get you on the road to achieving overall well-being. Will we see you at the next Publix-sponsored race in your area? Maybe not. And that’s OK. We just want to see you living your Life. Inspired.
