Hurricane season: Make sure you’re calm for the storm

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) expects the 2021 hurricane season to be another active one, with more than 15 named storms. Prepare for the things you can control with our pre-storm checklist.

Here in the Southeast, we’re no strangers to tropical storms and hurricanes. Storm season has already started and runs through Nov. 30. It’s imperative to prepare early so you can take care of yourself and your loved ones if you end up in a hurricane’s path.

Plug in the power

Power outages can happen during anything from a summer thunderstorm to a hurricane. Make sure you’re able to power through the outage with

  • batteries
  • your charged phone
  • flashlights and
  • a fully charged portable charger for your phone, tablet and/or computer.

Want to stay even more connected? Consider downloading apps built to help before, during and after the storm like weather apps, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) app or local government apps for critical information. You can also start a group text thread or social media chat with your friends and family ahead of time to share emergency preparedness plans.

Get tied down

It doesn’t take much for outdoor items to take flight during a storm. Avoid damage to your home or personal property by bringing in

  • plants
  • lawn furniture
  • tools and gardening supplies and
  • kids’ toys and pet bowls.

Don’t forget to take photos or a video of your home — both inside and outside — before and after the storm for insurance purposes, if necessary.

Be ready to grab and go

Sometimes, evacuation is necessary. To help alleviate stress during a storm, make sure your essentials are packed and ready in case of an emergency. Be sure to have a bag containing

  • prescription medications — at least enough for a few weeks
  • a first aid kit
  • a 3-day supply of nonperishable food
  • water for drinking and sanitation
  • clothing
  • important documents, such as insurance papers, ID cards and other personal records
  • personal supplies like baby items, feminine hygiene products, glasses/contacts and pet supplies and
  • COVID-19 essential gear like face coverings, hand sanitizer, soap and disinfectant supplies.
