It makes “cents” to go back to school

Once Terrance Johnson joined the Publix family at the Orlando Distribution Center a year and a half ago as a warehouse and sanitation worker, it didn’t take long for him to realize all the opportunities at Publix and know he wanted to stay here long-term. But in order to grow his career in another field at Publix, he knew he needed to go back to school. Thanks to our tuition reimbursement opportunities, Publix can help make his dreams a reality.

“I first heard about the tuition reimbursement program during my orientation,” Terrance said. “I’ve always been math-oriented, and I enjoy working with numbers. When I was looking at other Publix jobs online, I knew I could do them if I had the right education.”

Once he became eligible for our tuition reimbursement program, Terrance applied and was approved. He began taking accounting classes at Valencia College in Orlando, Florida. This spring, he’ll transfer to the University of Central Florida to finish his bachelor’s degree. When he graduates, he wants to work in accounting at the corporate office.

“Publix has really helped me out,” Terrance said. “Not only with helping pay for classes but even with my schedule. I do schoolwork and online classes in the morning, then work the night shift.”

Terrance encourages anyone interested in the program to look at education opportunities on PASSport. Publix is proud to offer tuition reimbursement opportunities to eligible associates obtaining their GED certificate, or pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree, technical and occupational programs, or individual courses.

“I would 100% tell anyone to do it,” Terrance said. “It’s worth it to go back to school.”
