Keeping associates and customers safe is one of our top priorities at Publix. We wouldn’t be able to do it without the dedicated efforts of our retail safety specialists and retail safety supervisors.
These roles are part of our loss prevention and safety team. These associates work diligently with store and support teams to reduce the frequency of workers’ compensation and general liability incidents by regularly reviewing safety processes and practices. Retail safety specialists are responsible for working with retail leadership to assess store culture surrounding safety, collaboratively developing safety plans and routinely monitoring performance results for their assigned region. They also help store and support teams comply with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards.
Senior Manager of Loss Prevention Paul Coil said the people who are often the best fit for the job are passionate about Publix.
“These associates operate like internal consultants,” Paul said. “Their typical day-to-day includes anything from creating and monitoring a plan to improve store safety to addressing store incidents and everything in between.”
Retail Safety Specialist Tawanna Daley and Retail Safety Supervisor Ryan Aflleje both serve our Lakeland Division.
Ryan worked at the Jacksonville distribution center before becoming an industrial safety specialist at the Orlando distribution center. He became a retail safety specialist in 2018 and supervisor in 2020.
“I enjoy being able to support our retail partners by promoting a safe working environment for our associates and a safe shopping experience for our customers,” Ryan said.
Tawanna began her Publix career in 1995 as a deli clerk. She held several positions in our safety department before becoming a retail safety specialist.
“I enjoy educating associates on how to successfully manage safety,” Tawanna said. “There’s nothing more delightful than when everyone begins owning safety.”
