Making small changes in your diet can lead to big results

A healthy diet and nutrition are essential to your overall well-being, but are you making the best choices with the foods you are eating? Adding foods to your diet like fruits, vegetables and whole grains in place of foods higher in calories, fat and added sugar may help you lose weight and reduce your risk of chronic diseases. These changes may seem small, but they can help make a big difference in your health and wellness.

So, where do you start? Thanks to our dietitians, that’s easy peasy lemon squeezy (into your favorite water for extra flavor, of course). Here are some tips for incorporating different, more healthful foods into your diet.

Breakfast

  • In place of regular sweetened yogurt, try plain unsweetened Greek yogurt topped with nuts, seeds and fresh fruit, such as strawberries and blueberries.
  • Are you a fan of waffles? Try frozen protein waffles, topped with fruit and sugar-free syrup.
  • When making scrambled eggs, try making them with fresh vegetables or pico de gallo (salsa) to kick the flavor up a notch!

Lunch

  • You can’t go wrong with a delicious peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Try making the sandwich with fresh sliced strawberries or raspberries instead of jelly to elevate the flavor profile. Delish!
  • Make the switch from enriched pasta to whole wheat pasta. For an option with less carbs, try vegetable noodles or “zoodles” found in the produce or frozen foods section.

Dinner

  • When thinking of what to make for dinner, try a salad from our produce department and pair it with shredded or sliced rotisserie chicken from the deli.
  • Use our Better Choice shelf tags to identify frozen meals that are lower in saturated fat, added sodium or added sugar compared to other frozen dinners.

Snacks and beverages

  • A snack we can’t get enough of is rice cakes topped with almond butter. You can even use an apple cinnamon or chocolate rice cake for added sweetness.
  • Replace soda with a quarter cup of your favorite juice mixed in sparkling water. Squeeze a sliced lemon or lime into it.
