Spring cleaning for your career

Warmer weather is on the way, which means it’s that time of year when we declutter junk drawers, tidy up closets and get rid of anything that doesn’t “spark joy.” It feels good to get your home clean and organized and the same goes for your career. Use these tips to help freshen up your professional life.

Dress for success
When we take pride in our appearance, we carry ourselves with dignity. Spring cleaning your closet includes your work wardrobe. Get rid of anything with stains, holes or that no longer fits. Spruce up your uniform by ironing it or trimming loose threads so you display professionalism in the workplace. Visit the Workplace menu on PASSport to find Publix’s appearance standards and dress codes.

Reevaluate your goals
Now is a good time to reevaluate your work goals and make sure you’re on track to achieve them. Ask yourself what you want to accomplish this year and write down a few attainable goals; don’t forget to also check in on your long-term career goals. This will help revive motivation, so you can feel refreshed and renewed at work.

Refresh your resume
Start by adding new accomplishments, responsibilities or skills. Update personal information that may have changed like your address or phone number, and be sure to review it for grammatical errors. And remember to update your professional networking profiles.

Dust off your interview skills
Review your updated resume to be reminded of your biggest strengths and accomplishments so you’re prepared to talk about them. Write a short opening statement and practice it until you feel comfortable reciting it from memory. Brush up on your answers to common interview questions. If you have a portfolio of work be sure to include recent projects. Check out our tips to prepare for an interview.
