Artists team up for Lakeland landmarks mural

This digital duo teamed up to draw downtown — and more.

Josh “Bump” Galletta and Fred Koehler got emails asking them to show up for a meeting with a special guest. When they arrived, they were asked if they’d be willing to work as a team to create the mural for #1659, Lakeland, Florida. Bump and Fred already knew each other, but they’d never worked together.

“For me, this was special,” said Bump. “When I first started to launch as an artist, I went to Fred for advice about the business side.”

They’re both illustrators; Fred writes and illustrates children’s books, and Bump creates drawings for logos, T-shirts and other items. Although Bump’s work is primarily black and white line drawings, Fred often uses rich colors to fill his intricate scenes.

After agreeing to work together, they began discussing the mural and creating thumbnails in their sketchbooks. They worked on their individual pieces alone before assembling everything digitally. The final piece, “Lakeland on the Move,” was printed on an 8- by 8-foot canvas.

The mural is primarily a black and white line drawing with large splashes of blue filling in three of Lakeland’s lakes and the sky. The image is a flattened illustration of the city’s familiar features, including the Publix birthday cake water tower. Between and around the structures, people are moving about and engaging in different activities. Bump drew the buildings and landmarks, and Fred drew the people from photos he took at local events.

“We wanted to show the diversity and activity that happens in Lakeland,” said Fred. “It started as a simple street scene, but it got bigger as we thought of more things to add.”

“We kept zooming out,” Bump said.
