Tallahassee artist Charity Myers talks about memories and big art.
Each GreenWise Market will feature a unique mural created by an artist from the local community. Read on to learn about the one you’ll find at #1573, Tallahassee, Florida. We’ll tell the stories of future murals and artists as new stores open.
Tell us about your ideas for the piece.
This piece is titled “Pedaling Pink on Paths of Gold,” and includes old photos of people riding bicycles. Tallahassee has created a more bike-friendly area downtown, and this store is in the heart of where that’s happening. People want to ride their bikes for transportation, so I think they can relate to what’s happening in our community.
And I think riding a bike is a universal experience. Even if you don’t bike now, you probably did as a kid. You have romanticized memories of your bike as a child and how it gave you the freedom to get away with your friends.
Is this the biggest piece you’ve created?
Oh, yes! These are the largest panels I’ve done. I was so happy for this opportunity because I’ve wanted to make my art larger, but I didn’t have space for them.
Old photos are small — smaller than what we print these days. I was worried about the scale of the photos to the canvas. But since I’ve finished these, I’ve been working on larger canvases. I feel like this project gave me the freedom and inspiration to go bigger.

How does the mural connect to the rest of your work?
I use old photos in all my pieces because they connect to the past and shared memories. They’re stories of someone’s individual memory, but they’re also about our collective memories. We all have similar experiences like riding bikes, posing with a fish we caught or going to the beach with our family. These same experiences are found in so many photos, so I love the idea of that connection.
It’s easy to feel isolated. I want to show we’re all doing things we enjoy, and they’re often the same things! I think it’s positive to find ways we can connect to other people.
Charity Myers and “Pedaling Pink on Paths of Gold”
Charity is a fifth-generation Floridian. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Florida State University and worked at the Museum of Florida History for more than 10 years. She became a full-time artist after her daughter was born, and she exhibits her work regularly at a variety of Tallahassee venues.
“Pedaling Pink on Paths of Gold” is made of four panels. Each panel is four feet wide and six feet tall. The piece is a mixed media collage with a band of photos and postcards across its width. Each photo and postcard is bordered in imitation gold-leaf, and the top and bottom of the canvases are covered in abstract layers of blue, yellow and pink paint.
