Matt Tomlinson began his Publix career in 2010 as a fleet maintenance fuel truck operator in Lakeland, Florida. He improved his skills and knowledge so he could become a fleet maintenance diesel mechanic.

In his role, Matt works on our tractors and trucks, ensuring they operate at peak performance. When a driver finishes their shift, they submit a request to have their vehicle checked. From there, Matt inspects the vehicle for any areas or parts that need maintenance, repairs, tuneups and more.

His work can include everything from oil changes and brake replacements to tire services, engine diagnostics and electrical troubleshooting. After finishing a job, Matt documents what was completed, and the vehicle is ready to go back on the road.

“I enjoy the physical labor aspect of the job,” he said. “I’ve always been more of a hands-on person rather than a computer guy. My dad was a diesel mechanic for Publix for over 20 years, so it made sense for me to follow in his footsteps.”

An important part of Matt’s job is adapting to frequent vehicle upgrades. Fleet maintenance technicians receive regular training on the new technologies built into vehicles and equipment each year. Frequent training sessions give technicians the skills to fix all the features that eventually break down.

“When I started this job, I just knew the basics,” said Matt. “I was fortunate that Publix gave me the tools and resources to grow into the highly skilled mechanic I am today.”
