And Cashier Nell Amos, #659, College Park, Florida, will tell you that with a smile from ear to ear.

As she puts it, Nell is 86 years young and doesn’t plan on slowing down anytime soon. Before coming to Publix, she worked at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, for 30 years. In 2001, she decided it was time to retire, but that only lasted 2 years.

“I got bored! I spent those 2 years retired and realized I wanted a new adventure,” Nell said. “I had always shopped at Publix, so I thought it would be a great opportunity.”

Nell knew she wanted to become a cashier because she loves working closely with people and assisting those who come into the store in any way she can.

“It gives you the chance to connect with customers on a different, more personal level,” said Nell. “Most of the people who live in our area are elderly. I can relate to them and help make their trip as easy as possible. It just takes a little patience and a lot of love.”

In the 18 years she has worked for Publix, Nell has spent plenty of time getting to know her frequent customers.

“My regulars are like an extended family to me. I have met their kids and grandkids and watched them grow up in front of my eyes,” Nell said.

Because most of her regular shoppers are elderly and were not comfortable being in public before the COVID-19 vaccine became available, Nell recently reunited with them for the first time in almost 2 years! To mark the occasion, a regular customer at #659 and a fan of Nell’s submitted a heartfelt letter to the local newspaper about the excitement of being rejoined with Nell.

Because of Nell’s wonderful spirit and her dedication to providing premier service to her customers, she has been awarded a long overdue Mr. George Gold Coin. Our founder Mr. George taught us to treat customers like royalty, and Nell exemplifies that each and every day.
