Have you ever wondered how Publix decides which products or services customers enjoy the most? Well, for marketing analytics data scientists like Carlos Pacheco, that’s his forte.
About Carlos
Carlos started with Publix as a contractor in May 2018 and moved to his full-time position as a marketing analytics data scientist shortly after. Carlos attended the Universidad Rafael Urdaneta in Maracaibo, Venezuela, earning his bachelor’s in software engineering. He recently graduated from the University of Wisconsin with his master’s degree in data science.
What data scientists do
When asked what marketing analytics data scientists at Publix are responsible for, Carlos said, “We identify behaviors from our customers. We measure statistics and analytics that validate a customer’s interest in our product or service.”
Data scientists need to be skilled in many areas, including databases, statistics, data warehousing, programming, data visualization and problem-solving.
They provide insights based solely on data and business knowledge, without bias or preference.
Carlos’ favorite parts about working for Publix
Carlos said he likes working for the company because of the people, the environment and the diversity.
“We have a very diverse team with different disciplines,” he said. “We have people with backgrounds in economics, statistics, engineering, etc. Each person brings different knowledge to help solve problems.”
When asked to share advice with those interested in data science, Carlos said, “Just learn the basics and don’t give up! A lot of the concepts aren’t easy to understand, but be curious, consistent and ask a lot of questions.”
