Chris began his Publix career in 1986 as a front service clerk at #51, Tampa, Florida. In 1993, he transferred to support as a clerk in the treasury department. Chris worked in various positions within tax and treasury before being promoted to senior tax manager in 2004 and director of tax in 2015. He was promoted to his current role in 2022.
What did you want to be when you were younger?
As a kid, I played basketball and wanted to be a star player. When I realized I wouldn’t be tall enough, I knew it wasn’t a practical goal.
What’s the best career advice you’ve received?
It’s OK to make mistakes, as long as you’ve given it your best. The most important part is fixing your mistakes and moving forward with improvements.
What are you listening to right now?
I like podcasts. I listen to a variety, but right now, I’m into mystery and science podcasts.
What’s your favorite Publix product?
A thick Publix GreenWise Angus Rib-eye Steak on a hot charcoal grill. It beats any steakhouse in town!
If you could spend a day in someone else’s shoes, who would it be? Why?
I’d want to spend a day on the show “Deadliest Catch.” It would be interesting to experience what they go through in a day, and snow crab is one of my favorite things to eat!
What’s 1 thing on your bucket list?
One of the things that was on my bucket list was traveling to Italy. I went this past summer. It was one of the hottest summers on record, but we got to see everything.
What do you think is one of the best leadership qualities to have?
Humility. It breaks down barriers and helps build relationships.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I like to spend time with my family and friends, and my dog Winston. I also like to watch the Tampa Bay Lightning or the Buccaneers play. I really enjoy working in the yard or going saltwater fishing.
What is your biggest priority at home and at work?
Making sure my family and co-workers will be set up for future success
What is one of your favorite vacation spots during the warm summer months?
Anna Maria Island. It’s convenient, has great fishing and has a hometown feel.
What’s something about you that people may be surprised to learn?
I’m a proud recipient of the 2018 George W. Jenkins Award.
What’s your favorite ice cream flavor?
Publix Premium Ice Cream, Classic, Vanilla, is my favorite.
Do you have a favorite ice cream topping?
It’s hard to pick just 1. M&Ms, sprinkles and chocolate syrup is the perfect combination.
Do you have a favorite TV show?
“The Office”
What’s your most unusual talent?
When I was younger, I had a photographic memory, which really helped me in school.
What’s your go-to song to pump you up?
The theme song from the movie “Rocky”
