Developing processes with experience-driven knowledge

Did you know each retail business unit (RBU) has technical specialists who support store department operations?

These technical specialists use the knowledge and experience they gained from when they were department managers to help improve day-to-day processes within each RBU. Technical specialists are subject matter experts when it comes to the operation of a department.

Technical Specialist Jonathan Henson began his Publix career in 2014 as a meat cutter apprentice at #1415, Knoxville, Tennessee. He then became a meat cutter at #1418, Knoxville, before being promoted to assistant meat manager at #1415 and to meat manager at #1356, Cleveland, Tennessee.

He helped open 2 new stores in the Chattanooga, Tennessee, area before transitioning to a meat retail improvement specialist (RIS) in the Atlanta Division. He is now in Lakeland, Florida, as a technical specialist in the meat RBU.

“We’re involved with new processes, remodels, new store designs, equipment orders and changes of equipment. We provide training and help develop reference and procedures guides,” Jonathan said.

What’s the best part of his job?

“I love being able to help others and solve any issues with a program or process. We are continually improving by updating or adjusting systems based on the feedback we receive,” he said.
