Fleet safety supervisor’s knowledge and agility drive his success

Regional Fleet Safety Supervisor Jeremy Murdock oversees transportation safety in Lakeland, Sarasota and Jacksonville, Florida. His leadership style is solution-driven.

Jeremy started his Publix career in 1998 in warehousing in our low velocity warehouse. He worked in multiple positions before becoming a truck driver in 2007. In 2017, he was promoted to a front-line supervisor, and in 2018, he became a local fleet safety supervisor. He’s been in his current position since 2019.

He is responsible for:

  • Developing and implementing general fleet safety policies and procedures.
  • Reviewing accidents and taking steps to prevent recurrences.
  • Making sure vehicles are maintained adequately for safe operation.
  • Establishing policies for periodic vehicle inspections for malfunctions, signs of abuse, unreported damage and cleanliness.
  • Having repairs made as soon as possible.
  • Supporting the company’s truck driver training program to promote defensive driving.

“Jeremy built a very competent team of fleet safety specialists and has contributed to upgrading our training program,” said Fleet Safety Manager Russ Wainer. “Through his leadership, he has ensured the retention of many truck driver trainees who are vital to the company.”

Jeremy knows about the challenges of the job and how to master them because of his experience as a Publix driver.

“If someone has made a mistake, we’re going to have a conversation to help understand what led to that decision or that event,” said Jeremy. “Was there a procedural problem? A training issue? A behavioral problem? What can we do as an organization to provide resources to our folks so that decision or event doesn’t happen again?”

He is solution-driven, but the most challenging part of his job is being able to build a relationship with drivers — who are constantly on the road — and stick with the planned schedule.

“Every day is different. Even if you have great organizational skills, expect something unusual to happen. Being agile is important to be successful,” he said.

Jeremy is recognized as a My Publix, My Part difference maker because he hires, trains, promotes and retains the right people to execute our strategy. He also helps develop and maintain an agile and highly effective team.
