From idea to impact: Associate recognized with IDEA trophy

When Customer Service Staff Ethan Knight, #1412, Indian Land, South Carolina, submitted an Idea Spot suggestion about improving how stores sweep large areas, he never imagined it would lead to a companywide change.

In April, Ethan received the Innovators Driving Excellence & Achievement (IDEA) Award for an idea that helped inspire meaningful improvement across Publix.

Ethan’s idea created a spark

His concept was simple: replace standard dust mops with wider, more flexible V-shaped sweepers that could cover more ground and improve efficiency. While his original idea wasn’t adopted, it sparked conversations that led to something even bigger.

Because of Ethan’s submission, the customer service RBU, in consultation with the industrial engineers, explored new options with one of our suppliers and identified a 48-inch dust mop solution — an alternative that hadn’t previously been considered. As a result, larger mops were approved for companywide use, improving efficiency and debris pickup across Publix locations.

Turning everyday work into innovation

Ethan said the idea came from past experience.

“It actually came from a company I used to work at,” he said. “They had a V-shaped broom, and 1 person could sweep the entire store. Here at Publix, we had 2 people sweeping with 2 different brooms, and it just made me think there might be a better way.”

Encouraged by a fellow associate, Ethan submitted his suggestion to Idea Spot.

“I figured I’d toss the idea out there and see what happens,” he said. “I didn’t expect my suggestion to go this far.”

Feeling seen and heard

Learning that his idea helped drive exploration and improvement across the company was an empowering moment for Ethan.

“I feel seen,” he said. “I’ve worked at a lot of places that didn’t really value their associates’ feedback. The fact that even a small idea like this mattered — it’s overwhelming in the best way.”

Seeing his idea evolve into a tangible solution has been especially meaningful.

“It’s amazing that something that started in my head is now a real tool,” he said. “Knowing it’s helping other associates feels really good.”

Why associate ideas matter

For President John Goff, Ethan’s recognition represents what Idea Spot is all about.

“Ethan’s story shows what’s possible when associates share their ideas,” said John. “Innovation starts with associates doing the work, and each associate truly matters as an owner of this company.”

Encouraging others to share

Ethan hopes his experience encourages others to share their ideas.

“Put your ideas out there,” he said. “Even if you’re not sure it will work, the worst they can say is no. If you’ve got an idea, submit it.”

Idea Spot gives associates a way to share ideas that can help improve Publix every day.
