Jaz Ovcina, Atlanta Division Regional Director

Jaz began his Publix career in 2000 as a front service clerk at #544 (now #1772), Tucker, Georgia. He worked his way up to store manager and served as a district manager for 7 years before being promoted to his current role.

What is something about you that people may be surprised to learn?
When I started at Publix, I didn’t speak any English. I only knew simple greetings like “hi” and “bye.” I had the opportunity to begin my career with Publix at a young age, and I like that I can relate to others who don’t speak English as their 1st language.

What is your favorite Publix product?
I love our Publix Bakery Chocolate Ganache Supreme Cake! Being married to a former Publix bakery manager (now an assistant store manager), I have learned a lot about the bakery items we offer.

What is your proudest moment?
In November 2021, I found out I was being promoted to regional director. I was able to tell my dad a few days before he passed away. It was good to hear him say, “I’m proud of you,” one last time.

What’s the best present you’ve ever received?
My wife has 3 kids from a previous marriage, and one year for Father’s Day, they surprised me by changing their last name to mine. It was so special because I have raised them over the last 18 years.

What do you like to do in your free time?
I enjoy spending time with my wife, kids, mom and brother. I also like to watch sports. Some of my favorite sports are football, basketball and soccer.

What’s your favorite Publix project that you’ve worked on?
About 4 years ago I was a part of the Great Place to Work project team, which was focused on our company’s culture and ensuring that Publix is a company that associates are excited to work for. Working for Publix has always been a badge of pride for me; the family atmosphere and culture are what drew me to continue my career with Publix.

What’s your favorite holiday side dish?
Sweet corn casserole. Every holiday season, it’s on our table.

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
To slow down and focus on quality over quantity. This has meaning to me, especially when interacting with our associates.

What’s your favorite meal from the Publix Deli?
The Publix Deli Chicken Tender Sub is by far my favorite.

What’s the coolest gift you’ve ever given someone?
When my family moved to the U.S., my brother stayed behind in Germany. I would always tell him jokingly that if he moved to the U.S. I would buy him a car. Well, he eventually moved here, and 2 years ago I was able to get a great deal on a car. I gave him a 1975 Chevy Corvette Stingray.

If you could be a holiday movie character, who would it be and why?
I would want to be Santa’s reindeer, Rudolph. Rudolph teaches us to never let assumed constraints hold us back, to leverage our strengths, to be prepared for opportunity and to not be afraid to take risks. It’s not always about having the spotlight but being a positive influence on others and enjoying the moment.
