John Gehring, Atlanta Division Director of Merchandising

John started with Publix in 1984 as a front service clerk at #174, Lauderhill, Florida, and later moved up to second assistant manager. In 1996, he was promoted to store manager at #556, Alpharetta, Georgia, before becoming a district manager in 2007. He was promoted into his current position in 2018.

Where were you born?
Cincinnati, Ohio

When did you realize you’d be beginning a career with Publix?
I left my first job with Publix shortly after leaving high school for community college. And I remember my store manager telling me, “You’ll be back.” And sure enough, he was right.

What’s your personal or professional motto?
Always invest in every associate you come in contact with. You never know how you’re going to impact them. Sometimes we’re Mr. George to a lot of people, and we don’t even realize it.

What’s your favorite Publix product?
Publix Premium Heavenly Hash Ice Cream. I love ice cream. I have to have a little of it each week.

What toppings do you like on your ice cream sundae?
Whipped cream, chocolate syrup, cherries and walnuts

What’s your proudest moment?
When I received the President’s Award in 2012 as a district manager. It was a humbling experience to be recognized in front of my peers and staff in the division.

What are you listening to right now?
I love Mötley Crüe, Rush and today’s country. I listen to a little bit of everything.

What’s your favorite movie?
“The Fast and the Furious.” I always loved cars as a kid and thought that was just the coolest thing.

What do you think makes Publix a great place to work?
The people. I love the environment, the challenges of the business, visiting stores, coaching, teaching and meeting Publix associates.

What is the best career advice you received?
Work hard and success will find you. I tell my associates, “If you’re not standing out, you’re blending in.” Every day you’ve got to be a difference maker.

What are you binge-watching right now?
“Yellowstone”

Favorite place you’ve ever lived?
Atlanta. You can be in 4 states in a matter of 2 hours.

Farthest you’ve traveled?
Bottineau, North Dakota, where my dad is from
