Katie Scanlon, Senior Director of Pharmacy Administration

Katie began her Publix career in 2007 as a floating pharmacist in Sandy Springs, Georgia, and was promoted to assistant pharmacy manager the same year. After holding various positions, she became director of central and specialty pharmacy in 2018. Katie was promoted to her current role in 2020.

What is the most important aspect of your job? 
Continuing to grow and develop myself while supporting the associates on my team and the Publix Pharmacy strategy. Our goal is to advance our pharmacy in a way that improves the health and wellness of our customers.

Describe the most fun part of working in pharmacy.
The team of professionals I work with makes my job fun every day. The fact that we are helping improve the health and wellness of our communities makes it that much more fulfilling.

What skills are the most useful in your current role? 
I’m fairly even-keeled, and I work through projects and problems methodically. I want the best for everyone on my team, the suppliers we work with and the customers we serve. I let that be my driving force.

Favorite place to vacation? 
Anywhere I’ve never been before. I have had adventures like doing an African safari in Kenya, taking surfing lessons in Costa Rica, visiting Thailand and, most recently, Yellowstone National Park.

Sweet or salty snacks? 
Both, at the same time!

What is your favorite room in your house? Why? 
My kitchen! My kids are always hungry, and I enjoy cooking.

What are you most thankful for at Publix? 
The continued opportunities to grow and advance, which are available to all associates

What advice would you give your younger self? 
Trust your gut and instinct!

What do you want to learn next? 
I want to master the forearm balance in yoga.

What’s your work philosophy? 
Love what you do and surround yourself with people smarter than you. You’ll rarely feel like you’re working.

When you are at the movies, do you get popcorn or candy? 
Both! I always have a box of Raisinets and popcorn. That is the perfect bite.

Would you rather skydive or scuba dive?
I’ve done both, but I will have to go with scuba diving.

If you could be a type of wine, which wine would you be? Why? 
Prosecco! It represents celebration, and I have much to celebrate and be thankful for.

What is your favorite Publix memory? 
Working through the COVID-19 vaccine effort has to top the list. Seeing all the different departments come together and make things happen in days, which typically could take months or even years, was the epitome of One Publix and the highlight of my career to date.

It is a Saturday night. What type of movie do you go for? 
Romantic comedy or documentary

What is your most-used phrase?
How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.

What is your guilty pleasure food? 
I am always in for a chef’s tasting menu at a great restaurant.

What is one sport or hobby you want to learn one day? 
Chess. I need to beat my 7-year-old son!
