Kevin Lang, Director of Marketing Communications

Kevin began his career at Publix in 1974. After 6 years, he left in 1980 but rejoined the company in 1981 as a marketing photographer in the Miami Division. He held various positions, including marketing manager and director of marketing for the Miami Division. In 1990, he was promoted to his current position.

What made you join Publix?
I wanted to save some money to put a down payment on my 1st car. My brother was working at Publix then, so I thought I would work at the same store, #70, Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

What do you enjoy the most about your job?
I love marketing and the communications we develop to help our customers and build the Publix brand. However, the best part of my job is helping other associates achieve their goals and career paths at Publix. Seeing others succeed brings me the most joy.

As a leader, what qualities do you use to guide your team to success?
“The 5 Levels of Leadership” by John C. Maxwell. They are position, permission, production, people development and pinnacle. It’s all about establishing relationships with others. I believe these levels will contribute to a prosperous career in any position at Publix.

Do you watch any sports? If so, what team do you enjoy rooting for?
“How ’bout them Cowboys?” I’ve always rooted for the Dallas Cowboys, even if they haven’t played well in recent years.

What’s one big project you were a part of at Publix?
I have been very fortunate to work on many projects at Publix. However, the project that stands out the most was creating, developing and implementing the Publix Baby Club and Publix Preschool Pals. These 2 clubs were unique in the industry. We were able to help educate new parents with tips on raising babies and preschoolers while offering savings on products that appealed to them.

What advice would you give to your younger self?
It’s not about the position or title that you hold. It’s about reaching a point where others will support you and follow you because of who you are and what you represent. Focus on others and help them succeed because when you surround yourself with successful people, you will get the most enjoyment and satisfaction in life.

Who was your biggest inspiration growing up?
My dad has been my biggest inspiration and motivator.

What’s your favorite Publix product?
It would have to be the Publix French Vanilla Coffee. It’s a great pick-me-up every morning.

Any hobbies you enjoy?
My hobby right now is spending time with my family and our 4 schnauzer pups. We have 2 miniature and 2 teacup schnauzers. They make our family so happy.

What’s your dream vacation?
Traveling to Switzerland, which is definitely a trip in the near future.

If you could spend a day with anyone, who would it be?
Our founder, Mr. George. I had the privilege of getting to know and spend time with Mr. George. Early in my career, I was the Miami Division photographer. I took thousands of pictures of Mr. George at grand openings, service award banquets and special events. I was able to talk with him during these times, and he was an inspiration to me and many other people in our company. Sometimes, he would stop by my office, and we would talk about the weekly ad. It would be a blessing to spend 1 more day with him, ask him questions and get some of his wisdom, especially knowing what I know and don’t know today.

If you had to pick 1 book to read for the rest of your life, what would it be?
The book, “Think and Grow Rich,” by Napoleon Hill. One would think it’s all about money, but it’s a personal development and self-improvement book. The book’s main theme is that anyone can achieve success and wealth by following 13 principles. Hill identifies “13 Steps to Riches,” which include developing a positive mental attitude, setting clear and specific goals, having a plan to achieve those goals and maintaining a strong belief in yourself and your capabilities. I highly recommend this book!
