Our refrigeration technicians keep it cool all year long

Publix refrigeration technicians are an important part of keeping our quality products fresh and reducing waste in our stores.

Being a part of the Publix family takes on a whole new meaning for Refrigeration Technician Dustin Takach since all his immediate family members also work for the company. Dustin began his career with Publix at age 14, in 2008, as a front service clerk at #675, Oviedo, Florida.

“At first, I didn’t know what I wanted to do for a long-term career, but I knew I wanted to work with my hands,” said Dustin. “I started getting to know many of the refrigeration technicians who were in the store on a regular basis and became interested in the work they were doing. I asked a lot of questions.”

In 2016, Dustin briefly left Publix to pursue technical training and gain experience in residential and commercial heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. He later returned to Publix as a grocery clerk at #1668, Longwood, Florida.

“I heard that Publix was launching its own refrigeration department. I knew I didn’t have much experience in refrigeration yet, but I was eager to learn,” he said. Dustin accepted a job in the refrigeration department as a refrigeration technician 1 and was recently promoted to refrigeration technician 2. “My HVAC experience helped me land the job, but I also had managers along the way who really invested in me.”

A typical day for Dustin includes visiting stores to perform regular maintenance and responding to service calls if equipment isn’t running properly. His favorite part about the job? Getting to see his former co-workers and being a part of the team that takes care of their stores.
