Warehouse Selector Brent Fry has spent his career with Publix, building 1 pallet at a time.
In 2015, Brent followed a friend’s lead and joined Publix as a grocery clerk. Over the next decade, he also served as a grocery team leader at several stores, eventually landing in his current role in our box/meat dairy & frozen food warehouse in Lakeland, Florida.
As a warehouse selector, Brent fulfills inventory orders placed by our stores. He receives orders through a headset that direct him to different areas of the expansive warehouse — including boxed meats, poultry, dairy, precooked meats and deli — where he selects the items on his list.
Brent uses a double pallet jack to transport these items through the warehouse until everything in the order has been selected. He then labels the order, secures it with plastic wrap, moves it to the loading dock for transport and repeats this process until all orders are fulfilled.
Quicker order fulfillment leads to faster store deliveries. However, safety is the top priority when operating equipment. The warehouse has selectors, forklift drivers and order checkers performing different tasks simultaneously, so everyone must be aware of their surroundings.
Describing it as a physically active and rewarding job, he encourages anyone interested in becoming a warehouse selector to go for it.
“I enjoy the people I work with every day,” said Brent, adding that the team is part of what makes his position fulfilling. “Whether it’s the retirement options, the ability to become owners or the supportive environment, Publix takes care of its associates.”
