According to a recent study by The NPD Group, the typical American eats more than 1,000 snack-oriented convenience foods throughout the year, with children and teens eating the most snacks. In addition, women eat more than three snack or convenience foods a day, compared to the 2.7 snacks men eat.
The top motivators for selecting a particular snack include taste, hunger, cravings, favorite snacks and convenience. Taste is the leading motivator across all groups, but women are more likely to select snack foods to satisfy a specific expectation like chocolate, sweet, crunchy or healthy. Kids are more likely to choose a snack because it is fun to eat.
The top five snack-oriented convenience foods consumed annually are fresh fruit, chocolate, potato chips, cookies and yogurt.
