Publix created the green routine program in 2001 aimed at environmental responsibility. Originally developed with an emphasis on conserving energy, it later grew to include recycling, reducing waste and conserving water and other natural resources. Today, the program encourages associates to look for environmentally friendly ways to complete their tasks or reduce waste in their daily routines. But it doesn’t have to be limited to just when you’re at work.
If you’re looking for a little inspiration, check out these easy ideas to get started.
- Bag it. Using your Publix reusable bag just once helps minimize plastic waste.
- Flip the switch. Turning off lights and unplugging appliances when they’re not in use could save 10 to 20 percent of your household electricity usage. If being in the dark makes you nervous, consider installing a dimmer switch to conserve energy.
- Run fully loaded. Only run your dishwasher or clothes washer when it is fully loaded. Not only does this conserve water, but it also conserves energy.
- Scrap it. Use scraps from your food to create a compost pile that can later be used to fertilize your garden or yard.
- Let off the gas. Avoiding rapid acceleration, properly inflating your tires and obeying the speed limit helps your car work more efficiently and use less gas. And since every gallon of gas you burn produces 19 pounds of carbon dioxide, you might be able to breathe a little easier.
