Publix sustainability by the numbers

We think our planet is an awesome place to live, so here are some efforts to help keep it that way.

Recycling*

  • Over 266,000 tons of cardboard
  • Over 11,000 tons of mixed plastic
  • Over 5,000 tons of mixed paper

Energy savings

  • 150,000 kWh of power per year generated from solar energy at our stores and support offices
  • 21 locations with electric car charging stations
  • Over 100,000 kWh* saved per store with LED lighting and motion sensors on refrigerated door cases in 944 stores
  • 20% reduction in electricity consumption from 2002 to 2020, while we grew by 816 stores. More stores, but less electricity used!

Food sustainability

  • Over 26,000 tons* of food waste by-products diverted from manufacturing plants
  • $400,000 donated since 2011 to Sustainable Fisheries Partnership for Fishery Improvement Projects
  • First U.S. supermarket retailer to participate in the Ocean Disclosure Project, which assists in informing customers about the seafood they purchase
  • $2 billion in food given to Feeding America member food banks over the past 10 years, which is more than 571 million pounds of food and over 476 million meals for people in need in our communities

Fuel savings

  • 300,000 gallons of fuel saved annually from trucks with more efficient engines
  • 3 million gallons of diesel saved since 2012 by adjusting truck loads and routes for efficiency
