Nov. 15 is America Recycles Day — a nationwide initiative with millions of volunteers and thousands of organized events to encourage recycling.
Recycling is a big deal to Publix. It not only preserves natural resources and saves energy, but it’s the right thing to do. Recycling reduces waste from landfills and helps keep our communities clean. Americans recycle 34.7 percent of recyclable materials annually.
Each year on America Recycles Day, events are coordinated by volunteers and companies throughout the country to promote awareness to recyclable products and encourage people to commit to recycling. Keeping America Beautiful — one organization that sponsors this effort — provides games, posters, banners, pledge cards, media scripts, and customizable newsletters and memos to help make these events successful. Anyone can join or host an event, make an independent pledge to recycle more or even locate recycling facilities by visiting http://www.americarecyclesday.org/.
Don’t forget, these common household items can be recycled from home.
- Bottles and cans — including food and beverage bottles and cans
- Paper — including cardboard, magazines, newspaper, paper bags and unwanted mail
- Plastics — including laundry detergent bottles, milk jugs and mouthwash and shampoo bottles
Check with your local recycler about recycling juice and milk cartons, plastic tubes and phonebooks. Plastic bags used for newspapers, groceries and dry cleaning, and the plastic packaging that covers paper plates, napkins, diapers, toilet paper and water bottles may be taken to many local retailers to recycle. At Publix, you will notice recycling containers for plastic, paper bags and Styrofoam (polystyrene) in front of or in the vestibule of all stores.
