Start the new year off right by Getting Into a Green Routine

The new year is the perfect time to start a new routine. Last year was great, but we’re on a quest to make 2024 the best year yet! Show our planet some love — Get Into a Green Routine as a part of your New Year’s resolutions.

Looking for a little inspiration? Check out these easy tips to help get you started at work.

  • Turn it off. Turning off the freezer and cooler lights when not using them and keeping the cooler doors closed saves energy and money. You can also conserve water by turning it off when not in use and reporting any leaking fixtures or issues with irrigation.
  • Reduce and reuse. Reduce the number of bags you use for a customer’s order by making sure they are properly filled. Encourage customers to bring in their reusable bags. Using a Publix reusable bag just once helps minimize plastic waste.
  • Recycle. We make it easy for our customers and associates to recycle by using the green recycling bins for foam, paper and plastic bags at the front of the store. Within your department, know what items are able to be recycled and follow procedures to ensure they are recycled properly.

Ready to step up your routine? Here are some things you can do at home.

  • Reduce and reuse. Bring your reusable bags with you each time you shop. Reuse containers or donate items you no longer need to keep them from the landfill.
  • Run fully loaded. Only run your dishwasher or clothes washer when it’s full. Not only does this conserve water, but it also conserves energy. And remember: no need to rinse dishes before placing them in the dishwasher!
  • Scrap it. Use scraps from your food to create a compost pile that can later be used to fertilize your garden or yard. Plan your meals and shopping list ahead of time to reduce food waste.
  • Turn it off. Turn off lights, electronics and small appliances when not in use to conserve energy. Use LED lightbulbs and consider Energy Star-qualified appliances where possible.
  • Recycle. Understand what is accepted for recycling in your area, and ensure you are recycling properly.

Get Into a Green Routine program

In 2001, Publix created a program aimed at environmental responsibility called the Green Routine. Originally developed with an emphasis on conserving energy, it later grew to include recycling, reducing waste, and conserving water and other natural resources. Today, the program encourages associates to look for environmentally friendly ways to complete their tasks or reduce waste in their daily routines at work and at home.

More than 40 years ago, Publix launched a program called Wring Out the Waste. It was one of our 1st efforts toward what we now call the Green Routine.
