Earth Day is April 22, and this year, it’s especially exciting for Publix associates. As of last November, we’ve saved more than 3 billion paper and plastic bags! So, we’re celebrating with all things green — like sustainable seafood and the Go Green video contest.
Many customers have made the switch and bring reusable bags each time they shop. But saving paper and plastic bags is just one way we can help keep our planet green for future generations.
For more than 10 years, Publix has offered more sustainable seafood to our customers, and Earth Day is our chance to remind customers of our continued dedication to this commitment.
For every pound of wild mahi-mahi sold April 10 – 23, Publix will donate $1, up to $40,000, to Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP). SFP is a non-profit organization whose mission is to rebuild depleted fish stocks and reduce the environmental impact of fishing and fish farming. Publix’s donation will directly benefit efforts to make improvements in the Gulf of Mexico.
Educating our youth now about how they can make a difference will help prepare them to make environmentally-friendly decisions later. This is the second year Publix has partnered with Newspapers in Education to host the Go Green video contest. The contest gives middle school students in all of our operating areas the opportunity to share their conservation ideas and ways their schools have gone green. The winners will be announced within the next month on www.publix.com/sustainability, featured in their local newspaper and presented a prize by a local Publix store manager.

According to the Department of Transportation, there are about 250,000,000 registered vehicles in America. The carbon dioxide emissions produced by that many cars is equivalent to the emissions from
- 1 trillion pounds of burned coal
- 50 billion propane cylinders
- 165 million homes’ electricity use for one year
- 310 coal-fired power plants in one year
