#1668, Longwood, Florida, is the first Publix to receive a Platinum-Level Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) GreenChill Store Certification.
The EPA presented the location-specific certification in recognition of our use of environmentally friendlier refrigerants. The system used at #1668 is expected to avoid annual emissions equivalent to an estimated 398 metric tons of carbon dioxide — roughly the amount of electricity used in 69 homes each year.
“Being intolerant of waste is ingrained in our culture. Our sustainability efforts in our stores are focused on reducing waste in ways that have a positive impact on our environment,” said Vice President of Facilities Bob McGarrity. “We are honored to have our efforts recognized with this top-level certification, and this is one example of our ongoing commitment to reducing our environmental impact across our company.”
The EPA and food retailers partner in the GreenChill program to reduce refrigerant emissions. GreenChill helps food retailers transition to environmentally friendlier refrigerants, lower the amount of refrigerant used, and adopt green refrigeration technologies and best environmental practices.
To qualify for a Platinum-Level Certification, which is the highest certification level, #1668 was required to meet a specific set of environmental standards.
Since 2008, we have also received 21 Gold- and 100 Silver-Level GreenChill Store Certifications.
