When it comes to producing brochures, printing signs or creating banners, most companies have to rely on specialized suppliers. But not Publix. Did you know we have a department dedicated to these tasks and more?
In 1958, Mr. George wanted to create order books for all stores, so the printing department was created. Today, General Manager Valerie Douglas oversees more than 200 printing and mailing services associates who produce about 95 percent of all printed materials you see in our stores.
“We handle a lot of jobs for Publix, and one of our strengths is the wide variety of services we can offer,” said Valerie. “A lot of printing companies specialize in one or two areas like label printing or basic copying. Our team offers seven different specialties under one roof, which saves Publix the added expenses related to outside companies.”
Associates in printing services have various responsibilities like preparing digital files for print, running printing presses or producing labels for Publix brand items. Others maintain the database that controls the store locator feature on www.publix.com. A team of photographers take pictures that appear on in-store promotions, in the weekly ad and within associate-facing communications like Publix News. And mailing services associates make sure all those printed materials are delivered to our stores and support locations for our customers and associates.
By the numbers
- In 2015, the department produced 305 million linear feet — or approximately 57,800 miles — of scale labels. That’s enough to circle the earth 2.3 times.
- The department averages the printing of 130 million shelf tags each year — nearly 2,300 shelf tags for each store per week.
- One associate makes all the engraved nametags associates wear in our stores.
