Plant City, Florida — a town just a few minutes away from our corporate office — is the winter strawberry capital of the world. The area’s warm days and cool nights nurture the right environment for growing strawberries this time of year. More than 10,000 acres in the area are devoted to growing strawberries.
Publix buys strawberries from six growers, some of whom have been in the business for five generations. Strawberry growers plant several varieties, and the berries sold in our stores may be a combination of these varieties throughout the season. This year, some of our stores will offer a new variety — the sweet sensation. This berry, exclusive to Publix, offers a good size and texture, and a sweet flavor. Volume for the sweet sensation is limited this season but is expected to increase in the future.
“Strawberries are delivered seven days a week, which allows our stores to sell the freshest, highest quality berries,” said Category Manager Curt Epperson. “In most cases, the strawberries our customers purchase today were picked in the field yesterday.”
For the best flavor, select strawberries with a full red color — no white or pink — and free of bruises. The strawberries should have fresh, leafy green caps, and the clamshell shouldn’t contain any juice.
Not only do strawberries taste good, they’re good for you. Strawberries contain many antioxidants like vitamin C, which help fight off illnesses. Look for our At Season’s Peak campaign to feature strawberries Feb. 26 – March 25, when they’re at their very sweetest and juiciest.
