Bill Booth — Business Development Director of Meat/Seafood

Bill joined Publix in 1981 as a front-service clerk. He became a meat cutter in 1983 and held several retail positions, including meat manager, before transferring to support as a meat merchandiser in 1996. Bill became a fresh meat buyer in seafood in 1999 and was promoted to meat retail coordinator in 2003 and deli category manager in 2009. He was promoted to his current position in 2013.

Where were you born?
Orlando, Fla.

What did you want to be when you were little?
My dad, uncles and cousins worked at Publix, so I always wanted to work there, too.

What brought you to Publix?
When my mom took us grocery shopping at Publix, I always pictured myself working there. I was excited about the energy in the store and the great aromas of the deli and bakery.

What do you enjoy most about working at Publix?
I enjoy making a difference with those I work with.

What has changed most about Publix since you started here?
Our growth is unbelievable, and as a result, so are the opportunities we each have to make a difference and grow ourselves.

What’s your favorite Publix product?
I would get voted out of here if I didn’t say Publix steak — especially our ribeyes.

What are your hobbies?
Golf and offshore fishing

What’s your work or life philosophy?
Be true to yourself and those you lead; show genuine compassion for our Publix family; have hope every day that each of us can make a difference; and know that no single individual can provide more than the team.

What’s the most challenging part of your job?
Making sure we’re providing our customers exactly what they’re looking for and a little more. Often, that involves innovation and that can be the most challenging part.

What’s the most exciting part of your job?
Seeing hard work come to fruition and seeing people get excited about change that will make us better.

How has Publix influenced you?
It’s made me better at understanding everyone’s input counts. It’s amazing what we can accomplish when we listen and work together as a team.

What hasn’t changed about Publix since you started here?
Our philosophy — provide great service, quality products and always take care of our people.

What’s your favorite Publix memory?
When I earned the opportunity to become a meat manager. Leading up to that moment, I had been promoted quickly, but it took me six years to reach the goal of becoming meat manager. So, I was very proud when it happened.

What’s your favorite sports team?
I have two: the Miami Dolphins and the Tampa Bay Rays

What’s your favorite movie?
Any movie starring Tom Hanks.

What’s your proudest moment?
When mentoring helps someone develop. I love seeing the impact we can have on one another’s careers.

Bruce Springsteen, because his music is about life experiences
