Marsha Singh, Lakeland Division Regional Director

Marsha began her Publix career 25 years ago as a cashier at #424, Palm Bay, Florida. After working in various positions, she was promoted to assistant store manager in 2004 and to store manager just four years later. In 2015, she was promoted to district manager in the Jacksonville Division before taking on her current role in 2018.

Where were you born?
Trinidad

What was it like growing up?
It’s homey and has an island feel. The culture is very rich, and we embrace each other’s heritage. For example, all businesses and schools are closed to celebrate all cultural holidays. As children, your neighbors are called aunt and uncle as a sign of respect.

What did you want to be when you were younger?
I wanted to be a teacher like my Aunt Anne.

What was going to school like in Trinidad?
We didn’t receive grades on our school work. Instead, you were ranked. You were always striving to be the best you could be so you could be one of the top five students in the class.

What’s your work philosophy?
I believe in Mr. George’s lesson of investing in others, and that’s how I want to pay it forward. We can invest in those we work with every day.

In your opinion, what makes Publix a great place to work?
Our diversity and the opportunity to advance.

What’s your favorite Publix product?
Publix Deli Hot & Spicy Chicken Wings

What’s one thing on your bucket list?
To visit India. My great-great grandparents migrated from India to Trinidad to help establish the island.

What’s your proudest moment?
Personally? Becoming a mom. Professionally? Being hired at Publix. I still remember being interviewed and the excitement I felt.

“The Fast and the Furious”

What are you listening to right now?
I’m on the road a lot, so I like to listen to books. I just finished “Start with Why” by Simon Sinek.

What’s your advice to someone just starting their Publix career?
Learn as much as you can and find someone to be your mentor. My now-retired produce manager showed me I could do more for Publix.

What is the best career advice you’ve received?
The best advice I’ve received is to build relationships while staying humble.

What is your favorite Publix memory?
Being promoted to store manager was awesome. When you’re hungry and want to work to that next level, there is nothing better than accomplishing your goals. I saw how important our store managers were and wanted that experience.

What emoji best describes you?
Probably the smiley face with the glasses because it is happy-go-lucky. But I really like Bitmoji. My kids created my avatar, and I love changing the outfits.

“The Crown” on Netflix

Out of the places you’ve lived, what is your favorite?
Jacksonville, Florida

What’s the farthest you’ve traveled?
Last year, I went to Italy. We visited Florence, Rome, Venice and Milan. When I was in Rome, I had the unique opportunity to have breakfast at the Vatican. It was incredible!
