Merriann Metz — Assistant General Counsel and Assistant Secretary

Merriann Metz

Merriann began her career at Publix in 2006 as an attorney in Publix’s corporate legal department. Since then, she was promoted to senior attorney and later to assistant general counsel. In May 2016, she was named the Assistant General Counsel and Assistant Secretary. Prior to joining Publix, she was an attorney for the Lowndes Drosdick law firm in Orlando, Florida.

What brought you to Publix?
I grew up shopping at Publix, so the opportunity to come to work for a company with a reputation for being good to the community and its associates was exciting. Working here, I learned Publix is so much more than a grocery store. Having a chance to practice law in our different business areas is really fulfilling.

How has Publix influenced you?
As a lawyer, Publix has given me the opportunity to broaden my horizons. I originally joined Publix as a real estate and regulatory lawyer, but my practice area now covers a number of other areas as well. As a person, I have grown because of the positive influence of our leaders and my co-workers. Being around amazing people every day changes you.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
Watching the people I work with grow and develop. It’s exciting to see associates come here and develop into our next generation of leaders.

What’s your favorite Publix memory?
Being given a commemorative Coca-Cola bottle for the opening of our 1,000th store. It was particularly special because I worked on that lease.

What’s your work or life philosophy?
Give 150 percent.

What did you want to be when you were little?
I wanted to be a scientist. I loved the idea of searching out facts and then analyzing them in pursuit of progress. Being a lawyer requires a similar analytical thought process, but for me is more rewarding because the work is geared toward helping people accomplish their specific goals.

What do you enjoy most about working at Publix?
The people and my work.

What’s your proudest moment?
Finalizing the lease for our 1,000th store!

What has changed most about Publix since you started here?
We’ve grown so much! When I first got here, we weren’t in North Carolina, let alone setting our sights on Virginia. The legal department was so small. Our company’s growth has been phenomenal.

Where were you born?
Clearwater, Florida

What’s your guilty pleasure?
A nice glass of red wine.

What’s your favorite book?
The Century Trilogy books by Ken Follett

How do you spend your spare time?
With my family, my church and serving Easter Seals.

What is your favorite Publix product?
Right now, it’s the beet apple quinoa salad from GreenWise.

What music are you listening to right now?
Joshua Bell while I’m drafting and U2 during my commute.

What is your favorite TV show?
I love “24.” It’s the first show I ever binge-watched, and that was back when you had to go to Blockbuster to rent the DVDs!
