This month, Publix News met up with Decorator Mariel Hartley, #511, Tampa, Florida, who received her 15-year service award this year.
Publix News (PN): What brought you to Publix?
Mariel: My mom was a cake decorator at Publix, and I went to work with her for Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day one year. I fell in love with what she did, so when it was time for me to get a job, I came straight to Publix.
PN: What do you enjoy most about your job?
Mariel: I love being able to use my talents and be creative while also making money! I also love knowing as long as I’m doing a great job, it will always be here for me.
PN: How has Publix influenced you?
Mariel: I don’t remember a time when Publix wasn’t part of my life. It has taught me to appreciate having a good job and to always work hard to show you deserve it.
PN: What’s your proudest moment?
Mariel: I decorated a cake for my district manager once, and he took time afterward to write me a thank-you note telling me how much he loved it. It really showed me he cared, and it meant a lot to me.
PN: What’s your favorite Publix memory?
Mariel: When I was first hired, I got to work alongside my mom and learn decorating from her. I have many fond memories of working with her.
PN: How do you feel about receiving your 15-year service award?
Mariel: It reminds me I’ve been working here half my life! I feel very fortunate to work for a company that is so dedicated to its associates. I’m very proud to work here.
