Providing hope for the hungry

During Hunger Action Month in September, we highlighted our efforts to help alleviate hunger in our communities. Food is an essential need, but every day, 1 in 8 Americans don’t have enough to eat, and within our 7-state operating area, more than 8 million people are facing hunger. As a food retailer, we have a strong commitment to ensuring our neighbors have access to nutritious food.

In September, we announced that since April 2020, we’ve donated more than 33 million pounds of produce to Feeding America member food banks through our farmers and families initiative and Feeding More Together campaign. Through the farmers and families initiative, more than 18 million pounds of produce and 500,000 gallons of milk were purchased directly from Southeastern farmers who lost business as schools and restaurants closed due to the pandemic. Through our first 2021 Feeding More Together campaign, we raised nearly $5 million in customer donations which provided nonperishable food items for local food banks. Publix then purchased an equivalent amount in produce and donated it to Feeding America member food banks.

Also during Hunger Action Month, Publix Super Markets Charities announced it will donate $5.5 million to 300 Feeding America member food banks and other nonprofit organizations as part of their ongoing support to alleviate hunger and help local communities.

“As a food retailer, helping provide nourishing meals to our neighbors in need is at the heart of who we are,” said CEO Todd Jones. “It’s our privilege to join our customers in helping to alleviate hunger and do good together for our communities.”
