Celebrating the holidays with seafood

If you love seafood, you may know it’s quite popular during the holiday season. But over the last few years, its popularity has become year-round.

“Seafood has always been central to a lot of holidays,” said Business Development Director of Seafood Guy Pizzuti.

Italian Americans often celebrate Christmas Eve with the Feast of the 7 Fishes, a tradition that includes many kinds of fish and shellfish. Greeks also often turn to fish on Christmas Eve, as do those hailing from some island nations. Salted cod is a favorite for many.

“Since the pandemic started, our seafood sales have increased, including lobster and crab,” Guy said.

“We gained consumers who originally didn’t know how to cook seafood. Some may have tried, but weren’t successful,” said Seafood Category Manager Tonja Pratt. “During the pandemic, they turned to social media for inspiration, wanting to shake up the proteins in their diets, and now more people than ever know how to cook seafood.”

Around Christmas and New Year’s, lobster, crab and shrimp are our best-selling seafood.

“Customers will splurge a little more on products like bigger shrimp, for example,” Guy said.

So, if turkey, ham and lamb don’t fit into your holiday meal planning, try seafood this year. You won’t be disappointed!
