Be ready and stay safe this hurricane season

Hurricane season started June 1. From stocking up on essential supplies to creating an emergency plan, being proactive can help you weather any storm.

Follow these hurricane season tips:

  • Know your evacuation zone. Determine if you live in a storm surge evacuation zone. This information will help you know when to take action if an evacuation is recommended or required. Decide today where you want to go and how to get there.
  • Make a plan. Be prepared. Keep a full tank of gas when a storm is approaching. Gather important documents (identification, insurance papers, etc.), refill prescriptions in advance, have some cash on hand and download weather-alerting apps on your smartphone or other devices. If you have pets, include them in your plans.
  • Build a kit. Keep an emergency kit ready with essentials. Buy bottled water ahead of time, make sure you have enough nonperishable foods, have flashlights and batteries, consider getting a solar-powered battery charger, and include a first-aid kit.
  • Secure your home. Avoid damage to your property by anchoring anything in the yard that could become airborne. Board up your windows, and reinforce your garage door and tracks with heavy-gauge metal braces. Park your car away from trees and flood zones.
  • Help your neighbors. If you can, check in with neighbors, senior adults or those who may need help. Be generous with your time and resources.

During a bad weather event, associates should use the Emergency InfoLine to get updates on their work location’s open or closed status. Associates should also check with their manager. The Emergency InfoLine is 1-877-PUBLIX1 (1-877-782-5491).
