When the uncertainty of the coronavirus set in, people flooded our stores looking for the essentials and comfort items they would need to help get them through the coming weeks. Within a matter of days, shelves were cleared, online orders increased, and teams went into overdrive to serve our customers. The impact is still being felt companywide, but in true Publix spirit, you are banding together as One Publix with One Purpose to provide premier service throughout these unprecedented times.
While the pandemic is still part of our lives, let’s take a look at what happened — by the numbers — in March 2020 compared to March 2019.
- 18% increase in the production of milk, but a 51% increase for the period of March 12 – 26
- 29% increase in the number of deliveries made to stores
- 65% increase in the number of units of bleach sold
- 77% increase in the number of units of bath tissue sold
- 168% increase in the number of units of hand sanitizer sold
- 192% increase in the number of incoming customer care calls, emails and social media contacts
We also saw noteworthy changes in other areas during March 2020.
- More than 11,000 new associates were hired.
- ~ 18,000 plexiglass shields were installed in stores.
