According to the National Floor Safety Institute, slips and falls account for more than 8 million emergency room visits annually and represent the primary cause of lost days from work. So, it’s important to make sure you’re wearing the right shoes.
Associates working in fresh departments are required to wear slip-resistant footwear. In addition to providing greater traction in slippery conditions for on-the-job safety, the shoes can be weather resistant, keep your feet warm and comfortable and have durability to stand up to tough working conditions, according to www.business.com.
Slip resistant is not the same as oil resistant, water resistant or skid resistant.
“Oil and water resistant means the sole won’t absorb either, and skid resistant means the sole won’t leave marks on the floor,” said Retail Safety Coordinator Steve Livingston. “Look at the shoe label carefully when shopping to ensure the shoe you select is designated as slip resistant and that it meets the uniform standards.”
Speaking of shopping, check out different colors, materials and style — and try on the shoes with the type of socks you’ll typically be wearing. If you’re frequently exposed to cold or wet conditions, wool or synthetic socks are best for pulling wetness away from your feet.
