Get to know Truck Driver Ronald Starks

Ronald Starks has been with Publix for 33 years, a driver for 23 and a coach for 16. He has over 1 million miles of safe driving and competed at the Florida Truck Driving Championships 5 times.

What do you think contributes to Publix’s safety culture?
Publix safety is different because we’re held to a higher standard. It makes us better drivers.

How do you prepare for a day on the road?
I get plenty of rest. I also conduct a thorough safety check on the truck and trailer before and after trips, so my equipment is road-ready and my load is strapped down.

What skills do you find most useful in your current role?
As a coach, I need to know the safety rules and regulations. If anything changes, I need to be able to communicate it to my drivers. I also exercise patience while I’m driving and with associates I coach. They’re learning, and it’s my job to make sure they’re up to Publix standards.

How do you represent Publix’s values in the community?
I know I’m an ambassador for Publix, so I try to be courteous and perform my job safely. It’s important to me that customers can come to our stores and get what they need.

What’s your favorite Publix memory?
The year I helped with a toy drive. I enjoyed volunteering and helping others in need.

What’s your favorite thing to do in your spare time?
I enjoy spending time with my family, riding motorcycles and barbecuing. Barbecued ribs are my specialty, and now I’m working on my brisket.

What’s your favorite Publix product?
Our Italian sub with everything
